Being the Salt & Light in the Market Place

Man was created for a greater purpose than just his own success/ prosperity and that of his/ her family.  That purpose is advancement of God's Kingdom, and to bring Him glory and honor.

Every believer must answer the following imperative questions:
  • Why am I endowed with special skills & abilities?
  • Why has God uniquely opened certain doors in my life?
  • Why did God save me & has preserved me despite living in a wicked and perverse time?
  • Why are God’s immense blessings and His gift of life upon me?
Are God's gifts upon your life, are the doors that have miraculously opened upon your life, are God's immense blessings and salvation upon your life just for you and your family to enjoy?  Not at all!  God's working in and through us is for a greater purpose.  It is for the advancement of God's kingdom, and to bring Him glory and honor!

Genesis 1:28 is one of the scriptures that clearly outlines the purpose of God for man: “God blessed them and said to them, "Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on the ground."  God's intent at creation for mankind was that mankind would be fruitful, multiply and take dominion over the earth.  How is this possible, considering the numerous human limitations inherent in us?

The first thing that every person if they are to live a fruitful life of influence and dominion is to be reconciled to God by accepting Him to be Lord and Savior of their lives.  Without God, we are nothing.  Its only in Him that we realize God's purpose for our lives.  Secondly, every believer must chose to abide in God.  John 15:4 states, "“Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself unless it abides in the vine, so neither can you unless you abide in Me.”  We abide when we fully surrender our lives to Him and seek first His righteousness in accordance with Matthew 6:33.

Matthew 5:13-16:
“You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot.
“You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden.
Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house.
In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.

Salt has hundreds of uses and yet for purposes of this discussion I'll only highlight a few: seasoning, preservation, disinfecting and healing.  As a believer in the market place, are you causing the Lord to look upon your organisation/ department with favor and mercy because you are living a righteous and upright life?  Are you upholding godly values and reflecting Christ in the market place?  Are you snatching many from the corruption and bondages of sin and directing them to the cross?  Are the broken hearted, physically and emotionally sick people in your organisation and business experiencing God's healing through you?  Believers are open letters being known & read by everyone- 2nd Corinthians 3:2.  We are the only Christ whom many may ever see.  We therefore need to model righteousness and influence its establishment on the earth.

Believers are the light of the earth.  Light exposes darkness; where light is, darkness has to flee!  By virtue of you serving in your organisation or running your business, are the wicked acts of the kingdom of darkness such as corruption and immorality being exposed.  Ephesians 5:13 states, "But everything exposed by the light becomes visible-and everything that is illuminated becomes a light."  God’s light in us enables us to influence governments & enables us to possess nations for His Kingdom.  More than ever before, I am convinced that God wants to use believers to influence governments and possess nations for the advancement of His kingdom.  God's promise to those who chose the path of righteousness is found in Isaiah 60:3- "Nations will come to your light, and kings to the brightness of your dawn".  God is ready to use you in our beloved nation Kenya, and beyond; are you ready?  In fact, God challenges us in Psalms 2:8 to ask Him and He will make the nations our inheritance, the ends of the earth our possession!

Believers in Kenya must make deliberate and conscious decisions to live upright and godly lives.  Many believers’ minds are conformed to the patterns of this world, contrary to God’s Word in Romans 12:1-2.  Many of us are guilty of subscribing to worldly principles and assimilating to worldly lifestyles.  I pray that God renews the spirits of our minds.  Following Christ is a deliberate choice/ decision that each believer must make.  This is because, living for God is never by accident or coincidental!  Matthew 16:24 states “Then Jesus said to his disciples, "Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.”  The Kingdom of God is a progressive kingdom, that requires us to daily deny ourselves, crucify the flesh and follow Christ in obedience, if we are to keep in step with the Spirit.

There is a contention in the market place between God's purposes and the devil's schemes.  Integrity wrestles with corruption; immorality with purity; worship of the One True God with idolatry; only to mention but a few.  2nd Corinthians 6:17a is God's clarion call to believers in the market place: "Come out from them and be separate, says the Lord."  Isaiah heard God's voice ask, "Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?" (Isaiah 6:8).  God is asking the same today: Whom shall I send to schools, to hospitals, to the manufacturing industry, to police service, to the prisons, to parliament, to the Senate, to the judiciary etc?  Isaiah's response was, "Here am I. Send me!"  That is the right response.  In surrender, may God help us to go forth and accomplish His assignments in the market place.  God is ready to use you, are you ready to be used of Him?
